How to use triads to substitute for 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th chords

Use the following table for 3-note substitution for dominant chords
with four or more notes.

The table above is a quick reference for dominant chords, but you can build
any dominant chord from the basic triad.

Summary

For 7th chord use the triad a 3rd up (C7 = Edim)

For 9th chord use the triad a 5th up (C9 = Gm)

For 11th chord use the triad a b7th up (C11 = Bb)

For 13th chord use the triad a 9th up (C13 = Dm)

Remember, music is like trigonometry, it’s all about 3’s. In math 3+3 = 6

In music 3+3 = 5, because the start position is inclusive, 1-2-3, 3-4-5, 5-6-7, 7-8-9 etc.
