Chords by Gender

Piano chords have gender and you can use the chord gender to assist you with chord changes.
There are eight shapes for piano chords (triads), three are male, three are female and two are neuter(neutral).

 Formula 4L F1

Male I Chord

When the I chord is male the IV and V chords (the other two major chords) are also male,

except

D major where the IV chord is neuter, and

B major where the V chord is neuter.

When the I chord is male, the IV and V chords (the other two major chords) are also male.

The minor chords – II, III and VI are female, except

D major where the IIm chord is neuter (n1). and

B major where the IIIm chord is neuter (n2).

Female I Chord

When the I chord is female, the IV and V chords (the other two major chords) are also female,

except

Bb major where the V chord is neuter,

and

Db major where the IV chord is neuter.

When the I chord is female, the IV and V chords (the other two major chords) are also female.

The minor chords – II, III and Vi are male

except

Bb major where the IIIm is neuter (n1)

and

Db where the IIm is neuter (n2).

Neuter I Chord

There are five keys with neuter I chord, C, G, F,  F#,  Gb.

In the keys of C major all the chords are neuter (n1).

In the key of F# major the chords are irregular but you probably will not be using them much anyway.

The Tonic Chord Method For Left-Hand works best when the tonic chord is masculine or feminine. When the tonic chord is neuter there are other methods that work better.

Example in Ab major

In Ab major the major chords are feminine and the minor chords are masculine.

These rules do not apply to slash chords. Slash chords can be any gender.

Common or shared notes

Each note of the scale is shared by three chords.  It is the root of one chord, the third
of one chord, and the fifth on one chord.  Take advantage of this.  It helps when
the chord that you are changing to shares a note with the current chord. The next chord
will either use one or two notes from the current chord or an adjacent note.
