Chord Inversion Method 132 (R21)
The Chord Inversion Method 132 (R21) gives you the least
amount of hand movement when changing chords.
The Chord Inversion Method 132 (R21) is based on the
inversion of the Tonic Chord in each key.
For the purpose of this illustration we will use
inversion and position interchangeably.
Root 1st pos/inv (Root at the bottom) X-X-X
1st inv 2nd pos/inv (Root at the top) X-X- –X
2nd inv 3rd pos/inv (Root at the middle) X- –X-X
If the Tonic Chord is a 1st pos/inv chord, use the
following inversions for all chords:
I II 1st pos/inv
III IV 3rd pos/inv
V VI 2nd pos/inv
VII 1st pos/inv
If the Tonic Chord is a 3rd pos/inv chord, use the
following inversions for all chords:
I II 3rd pos/inv
III IV 2nd pos/inv
V VI 1st pos/inv
VII 3rd pos/inv
If the Tonic Chord is a 2nd pos/inv chord, use the
following inversions for all chords:
I II 2nd pos/inv
III IV 1st pos/inv
V VI 3rd pos/inv
VII 2nd pos/inv
Four-note chords have four inversions.
For four-note chords, use the triad portion of the
chord to determine the inversion.
