Every diatonic chord contains the tonic, or the leading note (tone), or the supertonic of the scale. If there are non-diatonic chords, the b7th or the b9th or the #9th may also be present. These notes are clustered together, so they can be used as an anchor for chord changing. We will call this Chord Change Anchor 789.

Example 1

In example 1a the key is B major and all the anchor notes, A# (7), B (8), C# (9) are at the bottom of all the chords.

In example 1b the key is B major and all the anchor notes, A# (7), B (8), C# (9) are at the top of all the chords.

anchor notes at the top of the chords,
then goes to the bottom in bar seven,
then back to the top in bar nine,
then to the middle in bar 13,
then to the top in bar 16.
